Denver portrait drawing - “making art together”

Every week we get together at St. Mark’s Coffee House on 17th Ave. to chat, drink a beer (or tea!) or two, and most importantly make some art together. The goal of the group is to practice drawing other people’s faces; it’s unlike a figure drawing event in that no single person is the model, we all are! The fact that nobody is necessarily sitting still forces us to work quickly and gesturally. When a new artist joins, it may seem daunting to try to get the likeness of others down as fast as possible, but the beauty of it is coming back week after week and getting more confident and familiar with everyone’s appearance. It’s a true joy at the end of the session to share our work and see how we’ve all depicted each other, and to see how everyone improves with time and practice. Not to mention the friendships that seem to naturally bubble up from our time together.
For our group show, we’ve chosen to share some of our drawings we’ve created at St. Mark’s, along with our own personal finished work if we wanted. We hope you enjoy seeing our depictions of each other, and you should try to spot the same people drawn in all our different styles!
Our Denver Portrait Drawing Group meets every Tuesday from 7 - 9pm. This is a beginner friendly group, and it’s free to attend (although we encourage you to get a drink or a bite to eat at St. Mark’s because they’re gracious enough to host us).
