Lakewood Arts (LAC) “Adopt-a-School” for January, 2025: ms. sarah’s class

For January’s school, we donated funds needed to purchase supplies for the “Only I Can Write My Story! (And Illustrate, Too!)” project initiated by Ms. Sarah for her pre-K-2nd grade students in Westminster, CO.

Ms. Sarah says: “Help me give my students a head start on writing! My littlest learners need the most practice and with these dry erase boards with markers they will surely be on their way!

We will engage our imagination and creativity while challenging our brain power to create a story with a character, a problem, and a solution. By practicing as a group we can model, explore, and master the fine motor skills needed to write.

On the rug, in groups of four, we will tell each other stories as we draw pictures to illustrate adding letter sounds along the way. It will be a fun way to display our stories each day to share with peers as we retell them with all the expressions they deserve.”

Lakewood Arts found this project on the DonorsChooose.org website, a 501(c)(3) charity where educators can request funding for specials projects and other supplies. (More than a third of students at this school are from low‑income households.)

We’re looking for a schools to “adopt” for the coming year. Please refer any school you know of that needs assistance. In addition to providing space for teachers to exhibit student artwork, we may also assist with art supplies, special events, or may be able to assist your class with a “guest artist teacher.” If you are a teacher interested in participating in our “Adopt-a-School” program, please contact us at lakewoodarts.president@gmail.

Lakewood Arts (LAC) “Adopt-a-School” for February, 2025: college view high school/cec early learning academy

In February, Lakewood Arts adopted two schools in Denver. Both projects were brought to us by co-op artist Katie Trapp. At the Early Learning Academy, the 3-4 year old students created a “fish in the water” project, which is on display at the gallery in February.

At College View High School, Katie will be creating a Shadow Box art project with the students. Their creations will include painting with acrylic, collage, and adding some assemblages in the shadow boxes. Lakewood Arts provided the shadow boxes that the students will be using for this project. We hope to exhibit the finished project at the gallery later this year.
